The Crossbowmen company was founded within the Historical Group in response to the need to offer an additional attraction to the show that the Mondavio Tourist Office was promoting (representations of Renaissance life).

It started out with just a few members and was closely linked to the historical group in its early years; later, it began to operate independently, both in relation to LITAB and other forms of entertainment for which demand had grown over the years.

People began to recreate and offer “military-style camps” where, alongside scenes of everyday life in a military installation, visitors could also try their hand at crossbow shooting. Initially, there were only shooting ranges, but gradually settings depicting life inside the camp were added.

An initiative that has become increasingly popular over the years, allowing the scope of the offering to extend further and further beyond its geographical area.

The possibility of using a “camp” has also been promoted by the Pro Loco of Mondavio as part of its historical reenactment event “Caccia al cinghiale” (Wild Boar Hunt). In addition, during the event, it organizes a competition between city districts in the setting of the Roveresca fortress.

In 1999, the Compagnia Balestrieri (through the Pro Loco of Mondavio) joined LITAB and began participating in the federation’s activities and various crossbow tournaments. After a period of experience and training, the first successes arrived.

In recent years, the company has promoted and managed its own tournament, under the name LITAB, linked to the historical reenactment, where it was responsible for opening the event.

Subsequently, it was felt necessary to make it independent and therefore move it to another period of the year in order to include it in the federation’s schedule.

In recent years, the company has begun a generational change that will allow it to continue its activities in the years to come with renewed energy.

The municipality of Mondavio stands on a hill, about 20 km from the Adriatic Sea, from where you can clearly see Mount Catria and Mount Nerone. The town is located between two rivers in the Marche region, to the right of the Metauro and to the left of the Cesano, in the center of their respective valleys.

It is part of the Metauro mountain community.

The name Mondavio appears for the first time in a document dated 1178 and subsequently in a Vatican register from 1289. Capital of the Vicariate with jurisdiction over twenty-four castles, it was ruled by various lords, including the Malatesta family, Alessandro Piccolomini, Giovanni della Rovere, Lorenzo de’ Medici, and the city of Fano.

Since July 2003, the municipality of Mondavio has been awarded the Orange Flag, a mark of environmental and tourist quality for inland areas, by the Italian Touring Club.

It has many points of interest, including religious and civil works:

  • Former Capuchin monastery (1578) The church and monastery have been restored and renovated and are now used as a conference and convention center. The artistic treasures that were once housed here are now kept in the Civic Museum of Mondavio.
  • Church of San Francesco (1292/1700) Transformed several times over the years until reaching its current configuration in 1700, it has a simple and majestic architecture, with traces of Baroque style. The facade is rustic, made of antique red terracotta, with buttresses on the sides; the slender bell tower in the shape of a corn cob is unique.
  • Collegiate Church of Saints Peter and Paternian (1300/1563) The building dates back to 1300. It was then renovated in 1563; the last extension was added in the 18th century.
  • Church of Santa Maria della Quercia (1500) The church contains interesting 16th-century frescoes attributed to the Presutti painters of Fano.
  • Rocca Roveresca (1482-1492, Francesco di Giorgio Martini). The eight-sided keep dominates the majestic fortress and is connected to a walkway protected by a small tower. Most of the interior rooms still retain their original layout and are currently used as exhibition and museum spaces, including an important armoury.
  • Apollo Theater (1600/1800) The theater was built at the end of the 18th century inside the 15th-century church of San Filippo Neri and radically expanded in 1887.
  • Town Hall: Built at the same time as the Franciscan monastery, the Council Chamber houses the precious altarpiece of the Madonna and Child by Carlo da Camerino, dating back to 1385, and the ceiling features the coats of arms of Mondavio and the twelve municipalities of the district, created in 1860.
  • Castle of Sant’Andrea di Suasa: A small village with medieval walls, 9 km from the provincial capital. Of ancient Benedictine origin, it was also part of the vicariate of Mondavio, as well as being a municipality until 1869.

One of the main events is the historical reenactment “Caccia al Cinghiale” (Wild Boar Hunt). This historical reenactment takes place in Mondavio from August 12 to 15. The historical event commemorates the arrival in Mondavio of Giovanni Della Rovere to take possession of the vicariate, a gift from Pope Sixtus IV, on the occasion of his marriage to Giovanna Feltria, daughter of Federico da Montefeltro. The common thread is the Gruppo Arcieri, Balestrieri Storici e Corte Roveresca (Archers, Historical Crossbowmen, and Roveresca Court Group), created in memory of those figures from the past who distinguished themselves in the military, in the humanities, in law, and who were advisors to illustrious Italian and foreign families. An important event held during the historical festival is the unmissable Renaissance banquet, where the guests, dressed in period costume, are welcomed by a character representing Duke Giovanni della Rovere, while musicians and jesters entertain the evening and maids and stewards serve dishes from times gone by. The festival includes various shows organized by jugglers and blacksmiths, before enjoying the now famous “Sound and Light Show,” which each year tells a story from classical mythology representative of the era and culminates in a roar of fireworks and the main symbol of the reenactment: the burning of the Rocca Roveresca.
