The Historical Group of the City of Popoli consists of: Standard Bearers, Trumpeters, Drummers, Flag Throwers, Halberdiers, Knights, Crossbowmen, Pages, and Ladies. The Group is distinguished by the colors yellow, blue, and red, which highlight the symbol of the Cantelmo family: a rampant lion with a three-pronged rake. The event that takes place in Popoli, the Palio e Certame de la Contea di Popoli, commemorates an episode involving the Cantelmo family, who ruled Popoli until the mid-1700s, and takes place every second Sunday in August.

Popoli is a municipality of about 5,000 inhabitants belonging to the Maiella and Morrone Mountain Community, with its gorges connecting the provinces of L’Aquila and Pescara. Popoli was once called the “Key to the Three Abruzzes” due to its strategic position as an important crossroads between Florence and Naples, Rome and Pescara. The Cantelmo Ducal Castle dominates Popoli, but there are many other attractions: the Pescara Springs, the Ducal Tavern, the Ducal Palace, the Church of the Holy Trinity, and the Church of St. Francis. Finally, we would like to mention the illustrious fellow citizen Ing. Corradino D’Ascanio (born in Popoli in 1891), inventor of the helicopter and the Vespa.
