The Compagnia dei Balestrieri dell’Associazione Palio Dei Castelli (Crossbowmen’s Association of the Palio Dei Castelli) was founded in 2000 to enrich historical games and continue the tradition of crossbow art, which in the Middle Ages saw the crossbowmen of San Severino renowned for their skills, so much so that several cities requested their help. The crossbowmen are part of the Historical Procession of the Palio dei Castelli, a historical reenactment that takes place on the feast day of the patron saint, St. Severino, on June 8. This reenactment was consecrated in 1984 and 1987, when the “Corsa delle torri” (Race of the Towers) was added. Castles and districts compete in various games to collect points for the final ranking of the Palio. At the end of the historical procession, animated by over a thousand participants who walk through the streets of the town center in medieval costume to Piazza del Popolo to the sound of trumpets and drums, there is a ceremony in which candles are offered to the saint in memory of the offering made by the subjects of the Smeducci family, who gave the custodians of the sanctuary on Monte Nero a wax sculpture depicting part of their castle. The Compagnia dei Balestrieri dell’Associazione Palio dei Castelli joined LITAB in 2005, in the discipline of crossbow shooting.
