Montefalco is a medieval town, and every year in August, medieval events and celebrations are brought back to life, such as the Fuga del bove (Escape of the Ox), a glimpse into medieval life dating back to the 17th century, where an ox was set free along the streets of the town and chased by the locals; its meat was then divided among the entire population and eaten, traditionally on Christmas Day.

Today, however, the protagonists of the festival are the four districts (San Bartolomeo, San Francesco, San Fortunato, and Sant Agostino), which compete against each other to win the Falco D’Oro (Golden Falcon), awarded based on victories in various competitions such as drumming, flag throwing, crossbow shooting, and relay races.

In June 2011, the “Compagnia Balestrieri Città di Montefalco” (Montefalco Crossbowmen Company) was founded, with the participation of crossbowmen from the four districts, and in March 2012, it was admitted to L.I.T.A.B.

Our aim is to demonstrate to the other companies present at Litab that Montefalco can also proudly boast of continuing what is considered the noble and ancient art of crossbow shooting, introduced to Montefalco in 1185 by Frederick Barbarossa and later in 1240 by Frederick II, who also increased the use of falconry and changed the name of the city from Coccorone to Monte Falconis.

This is our story and this is our motto: Vis et honor.

Due to its enchanting geographical location, on top of a pleasant hill (473 meters) that rises in the center of the Clitunno, Topino, and Tiber valleys, the city has been called the “Ringhiera dell’ Umbria.”

Where art meets rolling hills, where fresh paintings dating back more than six hundred years meet the typical gastronomic flavors of Italian culture, this is how the town of Montefalco presents itself.

Painters and poets, saints and politicians have stayed on this sunny hill: in Montefalco, Benozzo Gozzoli, a Florentine painter of the early Italian Renaissance, illustrated the life of St. Francis of Assisi by creating a cycle of frescoes that set the standard for subsequent painting. Herman Hesse strolled through its characteristic narrow streets looking for a detail to capture in time, virgin maidens devoted themselves to the Lord in the seclusion of its many monasteries, such as Santa Chiara della Croce, and an influential 20th-century trade unionist, Bruno Buozzi, was confined there against his will.

Thus, thoughts and lives have intertwined for centuries within the walls of the city, igniting new spirits, calming others, but always striving to create culture. Throughout the year, there are various interesting events related to traditions, folklore, and local products.
